River Plate won his fourth Copa Libertadores by defeating Boca Juniors (3-1, A. P.), after a grueling comeback final.
An image, rather than words, sums up this final return of Copa Libertadores. At the end of a breathless game, on a wire, former Rennes player Juan Quintero gave River Plate the victory over Boca Juniors (3-1 a. p.), by scoring a goal from elsewhere : a shot under the bar (110′) that triggered the cries of River’s supporters at the Santiago-Bernabeu Stadium, where the final had been rescheduled after the incidents of November 25, but also those left in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
River won the fourth Copa Libertadores in his history, the first against his enemy, Boca Juniors. The return leg was like the first leg (2-2), magnificent. Under the eyes of Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann, who had chosen to support Boca, the meeting was first that of Guillermo Barros Schelotto’s team. In the first half, Carlos Tevez’s teammates dominated: Pablo Perez hit Armani (12′, 35′), as did Dario Benedetto (35′, 39′).
